During the month of May, we've had steph's Birthday. Lots of our friends came to our Kings Cross appartment and we had nice cakes (thanks Clare for the cake from "La Renaissance" !!!) It was a nice "Tea Party". Here are a few photos.

Bon alors pour le debut de notre annee scolaire on va se mettre un peu en veille quelques jours/semaines. On calme un peu le rythme (qui s'etait deja bien calme) du blog mais on va continuer a donner des nouvelles pour la famille et les amis. Par contre les actions, on continue a les faire sans forcement les lister sur le blog, pas assez de temps... On laisse quelques idees sur le cote si vous avez envie d'etre un peu plus "vert"

Salut a tous !!! - Hi everyone!!!

Pas de nouvelle pendant plus de 15 jours... Bonnes nouvelles? Plus ou moins oui.

Depuis la semaine 7 nous n'avons pas arrêté nos actions loin de la, nous avons continuez et avons meme mis en place des actions pour les semaines 8 et 9 mais c'est simplement un manque de temps pour ecrire sur ce blog... Désolé...

Une grosse mise a jour va arriver la semaine prochaine et pour vous faire patienter voici quelques photos qui illustrent certaines des raisons pour lesquelles nous n'avons pas trouve le temps d'écrire...

Entre le 20 Février et le 1er Mars, Aninia une amie allemande de Matt était a Sydney et nous avons passé pas mal de temps avec elle. Mais nous avons fait des actions "vertes" :

Between the 20th of Feb and the 1st of March, Aninia, a German friend of Matt was in Sydney and we spent a lot of time with her. We did lots of green and sustainable actions :

Prendre les transports en communs (bus ou ferry) pour se rendre a la plage - Taking public transport (bus or ferry) to go to the beach (Steph & Matt, Manly - Ninia & Matt, Bondi)

Aussi nous avons commencé (ou recommencé) l'université tout en continuant a travailler donc cela a réduit nos temps libre... Mais nous n'allons pas laisser ce blog a l'abandon, demain nous publierons une mise a jour des dernières semaines.

Week 7 - Semaine 7

Voici les actions prévues cette semaine :

- Supprimer nos spam et emails inutiles. En effet, d'après le livre "Our Choice" d'Al Gore, le stockage des donnees informatiques mondiales sont responsables de 2% des émissions de gaz a effet de serre. Alors on élimine les emails inutiles stockés en ligne.

- Utiliser Znout au lieu de Google. www.znout.com, un site de recherche qui utilise la pub pour éliminer les émissions de Co2 de votre recherche.

- Acheter un vélo d'occasion. En plus Matt en a besoin d'un, ça tombe bien !

- Ne boire que de la bière locale. A Sydney nous en avons de très bonnes qui sont brassées localement et donc ont une empreinte carbone plus faible qu'une bonne vieille Kro qui aurait fait le tour du monde pour venir jusqu'en Australie...

- Se faire livrer des fruit locaux et bio. Puisque nous avons du mal a aller au marché, laissons le marché venir a nous !

These are the acions we are doing this week:

- Delete our spam and stale emails from our email box. Indeed, according to Al Gore's book "Our Choice", Data storage from the internet is responsible for 2% of Greenhouse gaz emissions. Let's get read of unnecessary storage then!

- Use Znout instead of Google. www.znout.com is using Google to make a research on the web and uses advertising to offset the Carbon emission of the research.
- Buy a second hand bike. Matt needs a bike anyway.
- Consume only local beers. Sydney has great localy brewed beers. It has a way smaller carbon footprint than a French Kronenbourg...
- Join a Co-op and get fresh in season fruits and veggies from local farmers. Since our attemps to reach the local farmers through the market failed, we will ask them to come to us.

Week 6 - Result(at)s - Semaine 6

On dira ce qu'on voudra sur nos actions et notre petit blog mais c'est un vrai boulot. En fait ce n'est pas tant de faire les actions que de les raconter sur ce blog qui est le plus dur. La vie que nous vivons au jour le jour est assez propice a l'implementation des actions qui nous amènent a réduire notre empreinte carbone. Par contre prendre le temps de rediger au moins 2 a trois posts par semaine c'est plus compliqué pour nous... D'ou encore un retard dans la parution des résultats de la semaine dernière. Nous en sommes vraiment désolé et allons continuer de faire des efforts pour publier nos compte-rendus au bon moment.

Last week we had a lots of fun things to do for this blog. We were not perfect in the implementation of the actions we said we would do but in the end it is not super-hard to do what we said. On the other hand it is harder for us to say what we have done. Publishing our results on this blog is more a challenge than the actions themselves and that is why we are late again in writing about our results. We are very sorry about that and we will put more efforts on being on time whne it comes to announcing and reporting our actions.

Une action sur laquelle nous avons déjà reporté c'est l'après-rasage. Ça c'est fait et ça fonctionne très bien. La peau de Matt est douce et Steph est contente...Nous avons également continué d'acheter presque tout nos produits de salle de bain en faisant attention a choisir des produits respectueux de l'environnement (du shampooing issu de plante, des produits non testés sur les animaux, pas de déodorants aérosols, etc.) et nous avons commencé a planter nos herbes avec un joli plant de basilique qui est maintenant sur la fenêtre de notre cuisine. Nous nous sommes renseigné sur le fait d'acheter de l'énergie provenant de sources exclusivement renouvelable et cela s'avère pas trop cher donc cela devra devenir effectif dans la semaine.

Finalement la seule action que nous n'avons pas encore faite c'est d'acheter nos produits au marché auprès de fermiers locaux. En effet, le marché local se tient le samedi et nous ne pouvions pas y aller Samedi dernier. Nous allons donc essayer de le faire cette semaine puis continuer les prochaines semaines.

One of the actions of last week has already been reported, it was the one about making our own aftershave. It works very well and Matt's skin is nice and smooth. Steph likes it... We also kept on buying eco-friendly bathroom products ( cruelty free, herbs based shampoo, no aerosol deodorant, etc.) and we started planting our own herbs with a basilic plant now standing outside our kitchen window. We asked our electricity provider about buying green power and realised that it was not so expensive. We will then definitively switch to 100% renewable sources for our electricity this week.

In the end the only action that we did not do is buying fron our local framer's market because the Potts Point market where we live is held on Saturdays and neither Steph nor Matt could go there. We will try and go there this week and the following ones.

Les calculs d'économie de Co2 pour la semaine dernière seront fait demain matin, tout comme l'annonce des actions de cette semaine. En attendant nous cous souhaitons une bonne journée. A bientôt!

Home made aftershave - Apres-rasage fait maison

One of the actions of the week is "Make your own aftershave". In order to help you do it Matt will explain how he does his own aftershave.

Une des actions de la semaine que nous avons fait et allons expliquer dans cet article est "Faire son après-rasage a la maison". Matt va vous expliquer comment il a fait.

First steps - Premières Etapes

The first step is to decide what you want to put in your aftershave. I think that there should be two basic ingredients in aftershave. One astringent in order to shrink or constrict your body tissue and close the pores or microcuts caused by shaving and a moisturing agent to give your face a smooth feel and moistirise the skin. Witch Hazel is a great and rather inexpensive astringent and I decided to use Aloe Vera and Body Butter as moisturizing agent in my recipe. You can choose other options such as alcohol (Rum for instance but no rubbing alcohol) for astringent and pure olive oil to moisturise the skin.

In my recipe, I decided to pick Aloe Vera from our plant (which is too tiny to supply me with all the aloe vera needed) and from a park not far from our flat. I bought witch hazel at the supermarket and added a little extra creativity by using the Brazilian Nut body butter given to me for Christmas by Sue, Steph's mum. I also added some drops of pine oil for the scent.

En premier lieu vous devez décider ce que vous aller mettre dans votre après-rasage. Afin de fabriquer un après-rasage efficace, il faut avoir au moins un produit astringent (qui va refermer les pores de la peau et les micro-coupures du rasoir) et souvent un autre hydratant.

L'eau florale d'hamamélis est un très bon astringent qui n'est pas trop cher (achetée au supermarché a Sydney, pour la France voir ici) et pour ce qui est du produit hydratant j'ai utilisé de l'aloe vera et du beurre corporel offert par la maman de Steph pour Noel. Vous pouvez aussi utiliser de l'alcool pour l'astringent (du rhum par exemple mais pas un alcool désinfectant) et de l'huile d'olive pure comme hydratant.

L'aloe vera provient de notre plante et d'un parc pas loin de chez nous (notre plante n'est pas assez grosse pour produire assez de feuilles) et j'ai aussi rajouté de l'huile essentielle de pin pour l'odeur.

Quantities needed to produce a bottle of around 200 ml of aftershave:

- 1/2 cup of Aloe Vera juice (about 6 to 10 leaves depending on the size of your plant) - 125 ml

- 2 tblspns of water (distilled water is better but I don't have any at home...) - 20 ml

- 2 tblspns of witch hazel - 20 ml

- 1/3 cup of body butter - 82 ml / 40g

- 5 drops of essential oil

Quantités nécessaires pour produire une bouteille d'environ 200ml d'après-rasage :

- 125 ml de jus d'Aloe vera (6 a 10 feuilles selon la taille de votre plante)

- 20 ml d'eau ( l'eau distillée est meilleure mais nous n'en avons pas)

- 20 ml d'eau florale d'hamamélis

- 82 ml ou 40g de beurre corporel

- 5 gouttes d'huile essentielle

How to do it ? - Comment faire ?

First of all you need to extract the aloe vera juice from the plant. This is easily done using our blender and passing the resulting mixture through Steph's tea sieve. When you have about half a cup of aloe vera juice, you can mix it with the water and the witch hazel. You can then stir and add the body butter and 5 drops of essential oil of your choice. You then need to stir it strongly and put it in an airtight container. Your aftershave is now ready to be used!!! You can keep it in the fridge if you want to use it for longer and don't shave very often but it is also fine on its own in your bathroom.

By doing this you will save money (aftershave is quiet expensive) and reduce your carbon footprint by avoiding all the transportation, packaging and manufacturing footprint of a product you would otherwise buy at your local supermarket. The body butter and witch hazel do have a footprint like any other product but since one bottle of witch hazel of 200 ml will supply you with more than 10 bottles of 200 ml of aftershave and 200g of body butter can be used to manufacture at least 5 of those same bottles of aftershave.

Vous devez pour commencer récupérer le jus de la plante d'Aloe vera. Nous avons utilisé notre mixer pour ça puis la passoire a thé pour récupérer le liquide. Vous pouvez ensuite le mélanger avec l'eau et l'eau de florale d'hamamélis. Rajouter ensuite le beurre corporel, melangez fortement l'ensemble pour incorporer completement le beurre au liquide et ne plus avoir de morceaux dans le liquide. Ajoutez ensuite les gouttes d'huile essentielle puis placer le mélange dans un container fermé (une vieille bouteille de toner de Steph pour moi par exemple).

Si vous appliquez cette recette vous allez non seulement faire du bien a votre porte monnaie mais aussi a l'environnement. Si j'étais allé au supermarché pour acheter mon après-rasage habituel, mon empreinte carbone pour l'achat de ce produit aurait compris entre autre la production, le transport et le packaging de cet après-rasage alors que si vous le faite a la maison, vous évitez ces étapes. De plus, les empreintes carbone de l'eau florale et du beurre corporel (car ces produits ont été achetés au supermarché et ne sont pas des produits locaux) sont diluées par le fait qu'une bouteille d'eau florale peut produire jusqu'à 10 bouteille d'après-rasage quand les 200 g de beurre corporel peuvent être utilisées pour environ 5 bouteilles d'après rasage.

Week 5 & 6 - Semaine 5 & 6

Résultats de la semaine 5.

Results of our 5th week.
Pour la semaine qui vient de se terminer nous avons fait toutes les actions prévues mais pas toujours a 100%:

- La cuisine au micro-onde a été mentionnée plus dans un article hier. Puisque nous ne mangeons pas très souvent a la maison en ce moment (ou tout du moins nous ne cuisinons pas beaucoup et mangeons pas mal de choses ramenées par Matt et réchauffées au micro-onde) notre consommation d'énergie provenant du four ou de la cuisinière n'est de toute façon pas très importante. Nous avons quand même fait l'effort de cuisiner un diner quasi-exclusivement avec le micro-onde et ce fut un succès!

- Steph a recyclé ses solvant de peinture. C'est une chose qu'elle fait depuis longtemps de toutes façons.

- Nous n'avons pas utilisé l'imprimante et gardé nos documents sous forme électronique. Nous avons par exemple mis en fond d'écran de l'ordinateur la liste des actions de ce blog a faire. Matt avait prévu de l'imprimer et de l'afficher au mur mais de cette façon c'est plus sympa pour les forets et tout aussi efficace car on regarde le bureau de l'ordinateur très souvent.

- Tous les déplacements de moins de 4-5 km ont été fait a pied au lieu de prendre le bus ou le train. Pour les déplacements plus grand nous continuons d'utiliser les transports en commun.

- Nous avons remplacé 3 ampoules par des ampoules Fluo-Compactes sur 5 chez nous. Sur cette action qui est une classique pour réduire sa consommation d'électricité nous ne sommes pas très bon... Nous voulons mettre des ampoules LFCs qui diffusent quand même une lumière jaune sympa et pas seulement une lumière d'hôpital comme dit Steph et c'est plus cher que ce que nous avions prévu donc nous finirons cette action plus tard lorsque cela entrera dans notre budget...
Voila donc les actions de la semaine. Nous avons un total de Co2 économisé de 8,4 kg ce qui est le plus petit total depuis le début de notre année verte. Cela vient principalement du fait que les actions que nous avons lancées la semaine dernière sont des gouttes plus petites que les autres dans notre océan d'actions... Mais sur le long terme ces actions comptent quand même pour beaucoup.

All the actions we were supposed to do have been done last week. Some were not 100% successful...

- We cooked with our microwave as the previous post tells you. Since we don't cook at home very often we are not using a lot of electricity in the kitchen these days. We still tried to have an almost all-micro-wave diner and it was pretty good.

- Steph recycled her paint solvent. It is something she has been doing for a while now.

- We didn't use the printer this week and kept our files electronic. An example is the list of actions for this blog. Matt wanted to print it and hang it on the wall but we decided it would be better to put it as desktop background of the computer. Since we use the laptop a lot we are still checking it and using less paper!

- All the commuting we had to do this week was done walking when the distance were less than 4-5 kms. For longer distances we took the bus or the train.

- We replaced 3 of our bulbs with Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs. We are still 2 bulbs short to complete this action fully. We want to keep a yellow light in our rooms and don't really want to have a hospital-like atmosphere in our living room but we didn't plan that those CFLs would be a lot more expensive. When our budget allows it, we will finish this action.
That's it for last week's actions. Overall we saved 8.4 kg of Co2. That's the less we've done for a week so far, but it is also because all those actions are small ongoing ones and they are the one filling the ocean up...

Programme de la semaine 6.

What's on for week 6.

La semaine qui commence va etre verte, tres verte...

- Nous voulons planter et utiliser nos herbes nous même sans avoir a en acheter au supermarché.

- Matt va fabriquer son propre après-rasage avec de l'aloe vera. Cela réduit le packaging, l'énergie dépensée par la fabrication et le transport d'un produit acheter en magasin.

- Nous allons acheter de "l'électricité verte" - provenant d'éoliennes, de panneaux solaires. Enfin nous allons voire si cette action est possible pour nous ici a Sydney avec notre budget réduit...

- Nous voulons acheter des shampoings, savons ou gels douche "verts" - qui sont produits avec le plus faible impacte possible sur l'environnement.
- Acheter la nourriture au marché local et éviter d'aller au supermarché pour la nourriture.

We have agreen week ahead of us... Very green indeed. Have a look at it:
- We want to plant and cook with our own herbs without buying them from the supermarket.
- Matt will manufacture his own aftershave with aloe vera. It will be less packaging, less energy for the transport and manufacturing of something he would otherwise buy at the supermarket.

- We will try to buy "green power" - power coming from renewable sources. We will see if it is possible here in Australia with our small budget.

- We want to only use green "bathroom products" - Soap, shampoos, etc. which are products with the smallest impact possible on the environment.

- We will buy our food from the local farmers market and avoid going to the supermarket for food.

La cuisine au micro-onde - Microwave cooking

The results of last week's actions will probably only come tom orrow morning so I wrote a little article about our experience of cooking with the Microwave last week. Here it is. Since we've had problem recovering the photos of the diner we took the ones from this article on the french website Marmiton.org

Microwave cooking - Cuisine au Micro-onde

Thursday night we tried to cook a whole diner mainly with the microwave. Matt found some recipes which looked yummy on the French website Marmiton.org and we had a diner made of courgette mousse and salmon timbales and floating islands for dessert. The courgette mousse and salmon timbales recipe can be found in French here and the floating island (also called snowy eggs) recipe we used is here. An English version of the floating island recipe can be found on this website but it doesn't use microwave. The floating islands are floating in a custard sauce which we also cooked in the microwave using this recipe (also in French, sorry...).
Jeudi dernier nous avons donc essayé de faire la cuisine seulement avec le micro-onde pour un diner. Matt a trouvé des recettes qui avaient l'air fort bonne sur Marmiton.org et nous nous sommes retrouvé a préparer des timbales a la mousse de courgette et saumon puis des oeufs a la neige. La recette des timbales peut être récupérée ici et pour ce qui est des iles flottantes c'est la. A noter que la crème anglaise a aussi été faite au micro-onde et la recette est aussi sur marmiton sur cette page.

Recipes - Recettes

Those dishes are really easy to cook.

For the Timbales you need to grate 3 courgettes, cook them with mint and dill in a saucepan for 10 minutes (that was the only time when we did not use the microwave for cooking this diner) and then mix them with 5 eggs and 30 cl of thick cream. You then put smoked salmon on the sides of 3 to 6 bowls (depending on the size of your bowls), fill the bowls with the courgette-egg-cream batter and cook each bowl in the microwave for 5 minutes at full power.

For the floating islands, you first need to separate the egg white from the egg yolk. Then you use the yolk to make the custard sauce (mix them with sugar, vanilla beans, cornflower and hot milk and cook for 1 minute in the microwave). Finnaly you whisk the whites with icing sugar and cook the mixture in the micro wave for 2 minutes at minimum power. You then cut the whites (snowy whites) and put them in small bowls and pour the custard sauce on top of it.

Les recettes sont très simple et bien expliquées sur les liens que je vous ai mis plus haut. En gros il faut juste utiliser un peu une poêle pour faire revenir avec de la menthe et de l'aneth des courgette préalablement râpées puis les mélanger avec une base oeufs-crème de type quiche, mettre tout ça dans des ramequins tapissés de saumon fumé. On fait ensuite cuire au micro-onde 4-5 minute (en fonction de la puissance de votre micro-onde cela peut être 2-3 minutes).
Pour ce qui est des iles flottantes, on se sert du micro-onde pour durcir les blancs en neige pendant une minute et pour lier la crème anglaise. Les recettes des liens ci-dessus sont très bien faites donc je ne vais plus décrire les recettes ici.

Results - Resultats

The result was kind of a success. The floating islands were really good and the fact that they were cooked in the microwave didn't make any difference (according to Matt who already had some before which was not the case of Steph and Jess who was with us for diner). The timbales, on the other hand were a little bit undercooked in the middle. The microwave doesn't really cook the dish evenly and some parts of the timbales looked more like a runny quiche and less like mousse...
On peut dire que le résultats des courses est assez satisfaisant. Les oeufs a la neiges étaient très réussis et les timbales peuvent s'en tirer avec une bonne note de 15/20... En effet c'est quand même très difficile de faire cuire les timbales uniformément avec le micro-onde. Le centre des timbales était un peu coulant et pas complètement cuit pour 1 timbale sur 3, mais au final ce fut tout de même un régal! Vous pouvez demander a Jess une amie de Steph et sa fille Eve qui étaient avec nous ce soit la pour diner.

How does it affects our carbon footprint ?
Comment cela affecte notre empreinte carbone?

According to brighterplanet.com, "Microwaves save both time and carbon — they use about 60-90% less energy than a conventional cooktop or oven". If we had used a conventional oven we should have had it on for about one hour instead of using the microwave for about 18-20 minutes. There is a pretty obvious difference here. We'll calculate the exact amount of Co2 saved on our calculation page within the next couple of hours.

D'après le site brighterplanet.com (en anglais, désolé) "Le micro-onde fait des économies de temps et de Co2 - ils utilisent 60 a 90% moins d'énergie qu'un four traditionnel ou des plaques de cuisson". Si nous avions utilisée un four traditionnel nous aurions du le faire fonctionner pendant au moins une heure alors que c'est seulement pendant 18-20 minutes que le micro-onde a ete en marche pour préparer ce diner. La différence est assez évidente. Nous allons calculer la quantité de Co2 économisée sur la page "calculs" dans les heures qui arrivent.

An example of Calculation - Le frigidaire - The fridge

Hi,

Last Monday we cleaned our fridge. The action was supposed to take place last week but we couldn't do it. Now that it has been done I wanted to calculate the amount of Co2 we have and will save thanks to this action. We then though it would be interesting to show you how we do the math behind the calculation page. So that is how it usually works:

First we have a look on the internet about the savings in term of electricity and/or Co2 released. We usually look at these websites first:

- brighterplanet.com - A great US-based website which helps you manage your carbon footprint and works a bit like a social networking site.

- carbonrally.com - A similar website focused more on competing to reduce your Co2 footprint more than others.

- The Bloom website of the BBC - A well done and design site based in the UK.

Those are great sources of information, both for actions on how to reduce your carbon footprint and also for calculating the amount of Co2 saved. The only problem is that they are based in USA or the UK. Nothing for Australia so far. If you know some sources of information for Oz please let us know.

For the action Cleaning the fridge, we found on carbonrally.com that it could save 150 pounds of Co2 every 6 months. This calculation being for the USA, we try to refine it and we also found on the same website that it was equivalent to 97 kWh per 6 months. We then took our electricity bill which converts kWh into greenhouse gas emissions for our usage of electricity in Sydney. Our electricity provider tells us that 535 kWh is 0.57 Tonnes of Co2 (The image below is only an example, it is not our actual bill). In the end we only have to make a simple calculation to know that Cleaning my fridge and making it run efficiently saves 0.103 To of Co2 every 6 months. We then have a look at the weekly saving and we end up with 3.97 kgs of Co2. Here is a summary of the calculation :

Electricity Savings / 6 months = 97 kWh (from carbonrally.com)
Equivalent in Co2 / 6 months = 0.103 To (from AGL, the electricity provider)
Weekly saving in Co2 = 3.97 kgs (from our brains dividing 0.103 To per 26 weeks)

There you go, now you also know how we do the calculation behind the table on the list page. We also have to say that we don't always have all the informations for each action and sometimes we make average calculations or no calculation.

Aujourd'hui nous voulions décrire un petit peu la façon de calculer les énergies ou non-émissions en Co2 sur la page "Liste et Calcul" de ce blog. Nous prenons en exemple l'action "Nettoyer le frigidaire" que nous aurions du faire la semaine dernière mais que nous n'avons effectuée que lundi dernier pour cause de suspicion de plantage de frigo... Une bonne raison pour repousser un nettoyage... Ou pas. Anyway, voici comment les calculs sont faits:

En premier lieu nous recherchons les sources d'information a propos des économies réalisées par nos actions. C'est souvent sur les sites suivants que nous trouvons le plus d'infos:

- brighterplanet.com - un site américain qui permet a chacun de manager et réduire son empreinte carbone.

- carbonrally.com - même genre de site plus axés sur la compétition entre membres du site.

- Le site Bloom de la BBC - Un site d'origine anglaise très bien fait avec plein de conseil et d'infos.

Tous ces site sont en anglais et ont pour origine des calculs des données anglaise ou américaines. Nous n'avons encore rien trouvé pour la Australie ou même la France mais si vous en connaissez n'hésitez pas a nous en faire part dans un commentaire.

Nous avons donc trouvé sur carbonrally.com que faire marcher son frigidaire plus efficacement après l'avoir nettoyé faisait économiser sur 6 mois 150 livres de Co2. Comme ce résultats est pour un américain moyen nous avons essayé d'en savoir plus et avons trouvé sur le même site que cela correspondait a 97 kWh d'électricité.

Ensuite nous avons pris notre facture d'électricité et fait la conversion entre kWh consommés et Gaz a effet de serre rejeté dans l'atmosphère. Notre fournisseur d'électricité nous dit que 585 kWh consommé c'est 0,57 Tonnes de Co2 (L'image ci-dessus n'est pas prise de notre facture, ce n'est qu'un exemple). Nous avons donc toutes les infos pour connaitre, après quelques simples calculs, la quantité de Co2 que nous n'avons pas rejeté dans l'atmosphère cette semaine et durant les prochains mois. En résumé :

Economies d'électricité / 6 mois = 97 kWh (cf carbonrally.com)
Economies de Co2 / 6 mois = 103 kgs (d'après AGL, notre fournisseur d'électricité)
Economies de Co2 / semaine = 3,97 kgs (d'après nos cerveaux...On divise par 26!)

Voila voila, vous savez désormais comment nous faisons nos calculs. Enfin vous avez un exemple, ce n'est pas toujours aussi simple. Parfois nous n'avons pas toutes les infos et nous faisons des moyennes, parfois nous ne pouvons pas faire de calcul du tout, etc...

Quoi qu'il en soit nous essayons d'être les plus transparents possible sur ces points la. Si vous avez des questions n'hésitez pas!

Week 5 - Semaine 5

Salut a tous, Hi dear friends,

Les actions de la semaine 5 seront :

- Recycler le solvant des peintures. Cette action est spécialement pour Steph qui utilise beaucoup de solvant pour sa peinture, soit pur rendre ses peintures plus plus liquide, soit pour nettoyer ses peinceaux, ou pour d'autre trucs... En gardant le mélange solvant/peinture dans un bocal et en laissant la peinture se décanter, elle peut réutiliser le solvant.

- Cuisiner avec notre micro-onde. Le micro-onde utilise beaucoup moins d'énergie que les autres méthodes pour cuire les ingrédients.
- Remplacer nos ampoule par des LFCs. Les gains en énergie ne sont plus a démontrer pour cette action. Nous aurions du le faire il y a longtemps...

- Garder nos fichiers sous forme éléctronique. Imprimer seulement si nous n'avons pas le choix.

- Marcher lors de nos déplacements. Utiliser l'énergie de nos muscles plutot que du pétroles dans un bus ou une voiture.

Actions for week 5 will be:

- Recycle paint solvent. A special action for Steph who uses lots of solvents when she paints. She keeps in a jar the mixture paint/solvent which is left from cleaning her brushes or mixing paint and solvents to dilute the paint and wait for the paint to sink down the bottom of the jar. She can then reuse the solvent!

- Cook with our micro-wave. Micro-wave are a lot more energy efficient than other cooking appliances.

- Replace our bulbs with CFLs. We should have done that ages ago...

- Keep our files electronic. Only print when necessary.

- Walk instead of drive. The energy coming from our muscles is greener than the one coming from a car or a bus.

Avant de fermer ce post nous devons ajouter un petit quelque chose a propos des actions de la semaine derniere. Apres avoir nettoyer de fond en comble notre frigidaire et l'avoir enlever toute la glace qui s'était accumulée, il marche tres bien. L'action Nettoyer le frigidaire de la semaine derniere a ete completée et cela sera ajouté au calcul de la semaine derniere.
Before finishing this post we have to mention that our fridge is working! After cleaning and defrosting it, it works just fine and uses less energy than before. Action Clean you fridge from last week has been done, we will show it in the calculation soon.

Week 4 - Result(at)s - Semaine 4

Salut, voici les résultats de la semaine 4.

Hi, here are the results of our 4th week.

Certaines actions ont étés plutot simple a mettre en place, nous avons fait des lessives a l'eau froide et nos habits ne sont pas ressortis plus sales ou plus propre qu'avant, nous avons fait bien attention a débrancher nos chargeurs lorsqu'ils n'étaient pas en marche, nous avons fait un grand tri d'habits dans nos tiroirs et commodes (Steph va avoir un stand dans un marché de Sydney dans quelques semaines pour revendre les habits que nous ne mettons plus puis nous recycleront le reste en les utilisant comme pattes ou les donnant a des associations) et nous nous sommes efforcés d'utiliser seulement des sacs ré-utilisable. Sur ce point Steph peut remercier la tante de Matt, Patoune qui lui a offert un très joli sac qu'elle a toujours avec elle sur son porte-cle. Je vais mettre une photo avec cet article dans les heures qui arrivent. La photo ci dessous vous montre (en mauvaise qualité, photo prise avec l'appareil photo de Matt) le résultat du rangement de nos habits...

Pour ce qui est de notre frigo, nous avons un léger problème en ce moment... Il est en train de nous lâcher. D'un certain point de vue cela devrait nous faire consommer moins d'énergie, mais en même temps ce n'est pas super pratique... le beurre est mou, on n'ose plus manger le yaourt ou boire le lait. Donc pour ce qui est du nettoyage du frigidaire nous le feront lorsque ce dernier marchera correctement ou sera remplacé. Et si nous devons le remplacer cela nous permettra de faire une nouvelle action verte, acheter des appareil ménager efficaces en terme de consommation d'énergie!

Most of the actions of last week were pretty easy to implement, no need for big changes in our loifestyle. We did our laundry washing with cold water and it didn't make any difference with before so we'll keep doing it, we made sure our chargers were unplugged when not in use, we sorted our clothes and Steph will hold a stand at Glebe market to sell our not used second-hand clothes. The bad photo taken with Matt's camera shows you the result of our sorting week.
We also tried to always have a re-usable bag with us. Steph received a lovely pink bag from christmas and she uses it all the time as it is attached to her keyring. Thanks to Matt's ant Patoune for that!

Our fridge had a bit of a meltdown this week so we haven't clean the coils. We think it's dying which will be better for our electricity consumption but isn't handy in the kitchen. We are a bit scared of drinking our milk and eating our yogurt now... Nevertheless, if we have to change it we'll be able to implement another action which is "Buy energy efficient kitchenware". Otherwise we'll clean it later on when we are sure it is working properly.

Pour ce qui est du calcul, les actions de la semaine passée n'ont pas un énorme impact sur nos émissions de Co2 mais c'est en les ajoutant tout au long de l'année que cela fera un impact important. Nous avons donc économisé 5,2 kg de Co2 avec les actions de la semaine dernière. De plus, comme nous continuons a faire les actions commencées les semaines précédentes, je vais mettre sur la page listant les actions et les calculs un sommaire mensuel prennant en compte les actions qui s'inscrivent dans la durée.

The calculation of last weeks savings in terms of Co2 emissions gives us a 5.2 kg result. It is not very big compared to the 3 first weeks but we most of the actions started last week are on-going ones. Since we will keep doing them in the future along with the ones started in previous weeks, I will keep track of our monthly Co2 savings on this blog. You will be able to find it in a couple of days on the calculation page.

Week 4 - Semaine 4

Coucou, Hi there,

Dimanche soir, Steph et Matt se sont assis 5 minutes et ont chois les actions suivante pour la semaine en cours :

- Laver vos habits a l'eau froide. Ou au moins une température plus faible qu'habituellement. Plus d'info en anglais sur Brighter Planet ici.

- Débrancher les chargeur non utilisés. En effet les chargeurs de téléphone, d'ordinateur, du modem internet, etc. sont en fait des convertisseurs d'énergie qui continuent a convertir une partie du courant inutilement meme si ils ne sont pas branchés. C'est donc une perte encore plus importante qu'uen simple prise lorsaue vous laissez un chargeur branché sur une prise apres son utilisation.
- Avoir avec soi un sac ré-utilisable et éviter les gaspillage de sac plastique.

- Trier nos habits et les recycler. Une deuxieme vie pour vos habits : les utiliser comme pattes, les revendre dans une boutiaue vintage, etc.

- Nettoyer le frigidaire pour augmenter son efficacité.

Steph and Matt sat down for 5 minutes last sunday and decided to chose the following actions for this week:

- Wash clothes at a cooler temperature. Not all your dirty cloth need hot water to be washed. See this short explanation by Brighter Planet.

- Unplug vampire chargers. Wether it's your phone, your computer or any other battery charger, they are actually transforming electricity to suit the battery need in terms of intensity. When your charger is plugged without anything on the other side of the wire, the electricity is still transformed and that is called waste. And we don't like that...

- Use a reusable bag. Less plastic bag is less waste and less petrol used to manufacture them.

- Clean your fridge. It'll improve its efficiency and use less electricity!

- Sort your clothes and recycle them. They can become rags for Steph's painting sessions, they can be used by someone else, some of them might be great in a vintage second hand shop, etc.

Results will be published at the end of the week or next monday.

Résult(at)s - Week 3 - Semaine 3

Bonjour les amis, Hi dear friends,

La semaine qui vient de se terminée a été riche en apprentissage pour nous. Tout d'abord, quelques minutes après avoir tapé l'article du debut de semaine je suis allé mettre un signe "NO JUNK MAIL" sur notre boite aux lettres et je me suis rendu compte qu'il y en avait déjà un sur la porte de l'immeuble. Ca fait donc une action de faite !!
This week has been a challenging one for us in terms of actions. We are still committed to reducing our footprint but some of the actions we said we would do have been more or less successful. Lets have a look at them :

First of all I found a sign "No Junk Mail" on the door of our building when I went to set one on our mailbox on Monday which helped us complete one of the actions. Easy one.

Ensuite nous avons entreprit de ne pas manger de viande. Je peux d'ors et déjà dire que cela n'a pas marché a 100%. Si nous n'avons pas acheté de viande au supermarché mais plutôt du tofu, des oeufs et des produits laitiers pour remplacer les protéines, nous avons quand meme mangé du poulet et du jambon cette semaine... Au boulot ou chez des amis, nous avons mangé 5 fois de la viande cette semaine. On dira donc qu'on peut faire mieux sur cette action. Quoi qu'il en soit si on compare cette semaine avec la même il y a une dizaine de mois, nous avons consommé beaucoup moins de viande et c'était le but. Maintenant il faut juste continuer (ce qui va être dur, surtout pour Matt...)

Then it became a little bit more tricky, especially when we had to reduce our meat consumption. The result is still quiet good but we had some chicken and some ham when we ate outside of home... We did not buy any meat at the supermarket this week but instead choose tofu, eggs or dairy for our intake of proteins. This is a change if we compare this week with the same one about 10 months ago and I thing that's what is important. We can say that we can do even better than this week because we still had some meat when we were not craving for it but if we slowly take the habit of eating less meat (which will mainly be hard for Matt !) it is what we want and what we aim for.
Pour ce qui est du composte, nous devons encore remercier Audrey qui nous a offert une poubelle Bokashi pour Noel. C'est un composte qui fonctionne par fermentation et non par pourrissement/oxydation comme les compostes habituels et qui présente le double avantage de ne pas sentir mauvais et d'accepter tous les reste organiques (légumes, fruits mais aussi la viande, le pain, etc...). En plus c'est assez compact et on peut le mettre dans notre petit appartement. Voici en photo a quoi notre poubelle ressemble. Et si vous voulez en savoir plus, voici un lien vers eco-sapiens qui commercialisent le "seau a compost Bokashi".
The third action of the week was done once again thanks to Audrey who gave us a Bokashi bin for Christmas. A Bokashi bin is an indoor compost bin and it is great. It accepts all sorts of organic matter (basically any food waste, from veggies and fruits to meat or bread) and ferment it. The food doesn't rot which doesn't release Co2 in the atmosphere and it is a very compact system that gives compost for your plants or your friends' plants. We set it up at the beginning of the year and it has been working very well so far. I will talk more about this bin soon but for now you can have a look here.

Cette semaine nous avons aussi réduit le temps passé sous la douche ce qui fut surtout un challenge pour Matt car Steph ayant grandit en Australie, elle a l'habitude des économies d'eau. Mais malgré les températures très chaudes de ces derniers jours (41 degrés hier!!) toutes les douches de cette semaines ont été courtes sauf 2 fois. Pour terminer Matt a mis en place des temps de mise en veille plus court sur l'ordinateur afin d'éviter de gaspiller de l'énergie lorsque l'ordinateur n'est pas utilisé. La photo ci-contre vous montre les parametres choisis.

The time we spent under the shower has also been reduced this week. Steph grew up with water shortage in Australia so she is used to it but Matt is still learning. we can say that 14 showers out of 16 were shorter than usual despite the temperatures hitting over 40 sometimes last week...

The last action done last week was the set up of shorter waiting times for the computer to turn itself to sleep or off. It was made using the power management option of our laptop and the settings we choose are in the picture just here.

Pour ce qui est du calcul de nos Tonnes de Co2 économisées, nous allons le mettre dans un petit cadre ci-contre en dessous de la liste des actions de la semaine. Cela devrait rendre ce blog plus lisible. Du moins on l'espere.

Au total, et meme sans prendre toutes les actions de la semaine en compte, ce sont environ 105 kg que nous avons économisés cette semaine. Et on ne va pas s'arrêter la car beaucoup de ces actions sont en cours et continueront pour aussi longtemps que nous le pourront. In terms of calculation of how much Co2 we saved, we will put this section in a small separate box on this website under the listing of actions. It should help the readability of this blog.
Even though not all the actions have been taken into account, the total for this week is 105 kg of Co2 saved which is a normal amount compared to the first two weeks (cf previous posts). Most of these actions are ongoing so it will only be the beginning for those ones, and we hope that you will also follow some of the advices listed in the last 3 weeks. Week 3 - Semaine 3

Pour cette semaine qui a commencée hier nous avons décidé de nous attaquer aux actions suivantes :

- Limiter la viande. En effet, malgré les polémiques pro et anti-viande, les recherches montrent que manger de la viande, c'est pas bon pour l'environnement. J'ai trouvé un très bon article sur le site Good Planet a ce propos ici.

- Utiliser le système de gestion d'énergie de l'ordinateur afin de le mettre en veille ou veille prolongé plus rapidement que la moyenne et faire des économies.
- Refuser les prospectus publicitaires dans notre boite aux lettres (cf ecolo street)

- Faire un composte (et oui, même dans notre appartement on peut...)

- Prendre une douche plus courte.

Rendez-vous en cours de semaine pour quelques zooms sur les actions de cette semaine et celles de la semaine derniere puis Lundi prochain on vous fait un résumé de nos actions !

This week we've decided to tackle these actions:

- Eat less meat. Indeed, despite a battle between pro and anti-meat-eaters, the usual meat we buy has a much bigger carbon footprint than other products which can bring you the same benefits for your health. Have a look at this New Scientistarticle or Brighter Planet.

- Use your computer's power management options. This will help you save energy and money! (Brighter Planet)

- Stop junk mail. This will save trees !! (cf BBC website, another amazing source of tips)

- Compost your waste. Even in our tiny appartment we can do it!

- Take a shorter shower.

2010 - Result(at)s - Week 1-2 - Semaines 1-2

Bonjour ! Hi there!

Pour commencer nous devons nous excuser pour ne pas avoir écrit de post la semaine dernière. Comme nous l'avions annoncé nous étions en vacance entre Melbourne et Adélaïde avec les parents de Matt et Anne- Marie une de leurs amies. Malheureusement nous n'avons pas trouvé de temps et/ou de connexion internet pour mettre a jour ce blog. De plus, comme nous étions toujours en vadrouille, nous avons décidé de refaire les mêmes actions que la semaine dernière. Ouais, on sait, c'est un peu facile mais c'est plus simple pour nous... Pour cette semaine qui commence on fera plus d'efforts.
Before talking about anything else, we have to apologize for our lack of post last week. As previously announced we spent 10 days between Adelaide, Melbourne and on the Great Ocean Road with Matt's parents and Anne-Marie, one of their friends. Unfortunately, we didn't have time and/or a proper internet connection to update this blog. Furthermore, since we were still travelling most of last week, we decided to do the same actions as the first week. We know it's an easy solution and we are sorry about that. Next weeks will be better for sure...

Quoi qu'il en soit nous pouvons déjà dire que nous avons réussis a effectuer toutes les actions que nous voulions faire, avec plus ou moins de réussite.
Les émissions de Co2 de nos vols ont été compensées comme le montre l'image ci-contre et cela nous a fait gagner 0,562 Tonne de Co2 ce qui est un sacré début pour notre année verte! Cela nous a couté 7,5 Dollars australiens. Nous avons également compensé nos émissions du vol de retour et au total ce sont 5 arbres qui vont absorber l'équivalent du Co2 émis durant nos vols. Je reviendrais dans quelques semaines sur ces arbres plantés et les différents mécanismes de compensation d'émissions de Co2 car c'est un sujet qui était au centre de certaines négociations au sommet de Copenhague en Décembre dernier et dont on ne parle pas assez...
De plus, comme nous sommes partis loin de notre appartement de Sydney, nous avons pris soin de débrancher toutes les prises et appareils électriques chez nous. Nous avons loué une voiture pendant 3 jours entre Melbourne et Adelaide et nous avons vérifié la pression des pneus (ce qui pour une voiture de location n'était pas trop dur je vous l'accorde... ) et les différents fruits, légumes ou autres produits que nous avons achetés étaient pour la plupart locaux.
Finalement, la derniere action avait déjà été faite avant de partir. Audrey nous a offert pour Noel une douche bas débit que nous avons installé il y a quelques jours déjà. Merci Audrey !!!

The thing we can say about our actions this week is that we've manage to do all of them with more or less success.
We started by offseting our Co2 emissions from the plane thanks to Greenfleet Australia. We bought the equivalent of 1.15 Tonnes of Carbon for $15 and this means that 5 trees will be planted in New South Wales in order to sequestrate the Co2 released by the plane to carry us from Sydney to Melbourne and then from Adelaide to Sydney this coming week. In a couple of days, I'll talk more about these carbon credits that you can buy pretty much everywhere around the world and how important they are. Indeed, it was a big issue discussed by leaders of the world during last month's Copenhagen summit and people should be informed about those "offset mechanisms".
Moreover, during this week we also unplug all our electrical appliances and switch off all the plugs from our Sydney flat, we installed a low flow shower head (given to us as a Xmas gift by Audrey, thanks!!!) and we checked that the tires of the rented car were properly inflated (Rented car are usually OK anyway.). Furthermore, almost all the veggies and fruits and other products we bought were locally produced.

Pour finir le résumé de la semaine, nous pouvons faire un rapide calcul des émissions de Co2 que nous avons économisées, et meme si nous ne pouvons pas etre sur de l'impact de toutes nos actions, nous pouvons dire que le résultat de cette premiere semaine verte est d'environ 1,26 Tonnes d'équivalent Co2 en moins dans l'atmosphere. Voici le calcul :
- Effacer l'empreinte carbone de nos vols - 1,124 To de Co2 equivalent (Co2e)
- Débrancher les prises - 0,21 kg de Co2e par jour soit environ 3 kg sur les deux dernières semaines
- Acheter des fruits et légumes de saison - Pas de calcul disponible
- Installez des douches “bas débit” - Pas de calcul disponible
- Vérifiez la pression de vos pneus avant de conduire - 130 kg de Co2e d'après brighterplanet.com

Pour une premiere semaine, c'est un sacré paquet de polution en moins dans l'atmosphere mais cela vient surtout du fait que nous avons éliminé notre empreinte due aux vols en avion. Les prochaines semaines devraient apporter un retour a la normale si j'ose dire...

To conclude the summary of last week, we can quickly calculate the amount of Co2 saved by our actions. Even though we can't always be sure about the impact of all our actions, we can say that 1.26 Tonnes of Co2 equivalent saved is the result of our first green week. Here is how I calculated it:
- Offset our flights' footprint - 1.124 To of Co2 or equivalent Co2 gases(Co2e)
- Turn off your power strips - 0.21 kg of Co2e per day so roughly 3kg for the last 2 weeks
- Buy in-season fruit or vegetables - No calculation available
- Install low-flow shower heads - No calculation available

This first week was thus very efficient in terms of Co2 saved. The amount of 1.26 Tonnes is huge for only one week but this is mainly because we used carbon credits to offset our flights footprint. Next weeks should show a return to"normal" emissions if I can say so.

2010 - Week 1 - Semaine 1

Hi everyone! Salut a tous !

For the first week of the year, we are not starting on a very green note because Steph and I are going to fly to Melbourne on Wednesday. We will spend some days in Melbourne at Steph's sister's and then drive from Melbourne to Adelaide via the Great Ocean Road and then spend a couple of days in Adelaide with a friend of Steph and then fly back to Sydney next week. Our carbon footprint for this trip will be quiet big compared the one we would have if we were staying in Sydney. Indeed, flying is an extremely emissions-intensive way to travel, but we also know that we are all bound to fly sometimes and this website is not about avoiding any emissions and live like a hermit. We will not be changing our way of life in an extreme way this year, we would like to live in a more sustainable way and let you know what we managed to do, what action is great for the environment, which tip is a good one for you to follow, etc.

Pour la première semaine de l'année, nous ne commencons pas vraiment sur une note très “verte”... En effet nous allons prendre l’avion mercredi pour aller a Melbourne, puis nous allons conduire de Melbourne a Adelaide via la Great Ocean Road et seront de retour a Sydney la semaine prochaine en prennant un autre avion... Notre empreinte carbon pour ces prochains jours va donc être enorme si on la compare avec celle d’une semaine normale passee a Sydney. Prendre l’avion est l’un des moyens de transport les plus polluant en terme d'émissions de Co2 dans atmosphère, mais cela ne veut pas forcement dire qu’il ne faut pas du tout prendre l’avion. Notre but cette année n’est pas de vivre reclus comme des ermites, mais d’appliquer des gestes et habitudes respectueuses de l'environnement dans notre vie de tous les jours et de vous faire part de nos progrès, nos erreurs, nos ratés, etc.

The first tip we will implement this week is then related to flying. We will offset the Co2 emissions of our flights for this holiday. We calculated the projected Co2 footprint (1.124 Tonnes) of our flights thanks to the website Brighter Planet (I will talk more about this website in the future since it is a great source of hints and tips for us) and used an Australian based organisation called Greenfleet in order to "buy" carbon credit. Thus, the Co2 released by the planes in order to transport us from Sydney to Melbourne and Adelaide to Sydney will be captured by trees planted in New South Wales (more info here).

La première action cette semaine est donc liée a l’avion. Nous allons effacer notre empreinte carbone due aux vols de ces vacances. Nous avons calculé les émissions de Co2 prévues pour nos vols grace au site Brighter Planet (Un site malheureusement en Anglais mais dont je vais parler beaucoup dans de futurs posts car c’est un super site pour réduire vote empreinte carbone). Nous avons ensuite utilisé une association australienne pour “acheter” des crédits carbone. Ainsi, le Co2 émit par nos vols entre Sydney et Melbourne puis Adelaide et Sydney va etre séquestré dans des arbres en Nouvelle Galles du Sud ici en Australie.

Small things... Let's make them big! - Les gouttes qui remplissent l'ocean

In order to fill the ocean with water, one must have started by pouring a drop of water in there... That's probably where the saying "A drop of water in the ocean" (saying used both in French and English, how convenient!) comes from... Or maybe not.

Well we don't really know about all this but it is not so important. What really matters is the fact that from tomorrow Monday the 4th of January, Steph and I are going to pour drops of watter in this giant ocean which is "solving the climate crisis". Each week, we will select and do a number of big or small things which will help us reduce our use of water, petrol, electricity, energy, etc... And thus reduce our carbon footprint. We are already trying our best to live in a sustainable way towards the environment, but we want to do more (the fact that Matt is starting a Master in sustainable Development does push us in this direction) and I believe that sharing our experiences might inspire some of you and turn the river of drops into an ocean some day.

Thus, you will see each week a summary of what we have done the previous week and what we will do the following week. This blog might slowly turn into a list of hints and tips for everyone to reduce their carbon footprint and there might then be some changes to the blog itself. We'll see how it goes!

Afin de remplir les océans d'eau, il a bien fallut qu'une personne commence un jour par verser la première goutte dedans... C'est d'ailleurs surement de la que vient l'expression "Une goutte d'eau dans l'océan". Ou peut être pas.

De toute facon ce n'est pas vraiment ce qui nous intéresse ici. L'important est qu'a partir du Lundi 4 Janvier, Steph et moi allons choisir 5 actions a faire afin de réduire notre consomation d'eau, d'électricité, de pétrole, d'énergie, etc... Tout ca pour réduire notre empreinte carbone. Nous essayons deja d'adapter notre vie au jour le jour afin de réduire au maximum nos émissions de CO2 dams l'atmosphère, mais nous voulons faire plus. De plus, je pense que partager nos expériences avec vous est ce qui pourra changer nos gouttes d'eau en ocean (et comme je commence un Master en Développement Durable dans deux mois je suis d'autant plus concerné!)
Ainsi, vous devriez retrouver chaque semaine sur ce blog un résumé de ce que nous avons fait la semaine précédente et une annonce de ce que nous prévoyons de faire pour la semaine a venir. Ce blog tournera peut etre en un listing d'actions a faire pour être plus respectueux envers l'environnement et devra alors peut évoluer un peu... Nous verrons ce que l'avenir nous offre.

Some other News - Nouvelles pas comme les autres

Cela fait longtemps, bien longtemps que nous n'avons rien écrit sur ce blog. Et pourtant des nouvelles il y en a. Steph qui peint, qui est malade, qui se remet à faire du vélo. Matt qui a perdu son boulot, qui veut faire un master en développement durable, qui se bat avec l'immigration pour ne pas être déporté, qui joue au foot...
Enfin bon si nous n'avons pas raconté nos pérégrinations c'est peut être que nous étions occupés, que nous n'avions pas forcément le coeur à écrire sur ce blog, que l'envie de partager était moins présente. Va savoir Charles !

Quoi qu'il en soit ce matin j'ai (Matt) lu un article très intéressant et vrai sur l'Australie et je voulais le partager. Le journaliste parle de la dernière pub de Qantas (1ère Compagnie Aérienne australienne) qui depuis un certain nombre d'années fait des pubs avec la chanson "I still call Australia Home" i.e. J'appelle toujours l'Australie ma maison avec des enfants qui chantent. Pour la première fois cette année la chanson est chantée en langage aborigène par un enfant aborigène. L'article parle de l'intégration des Aborigènes dans la culture et la société australienne. Il est à mon sens très vrai. Voici la vidéo en question, et l'article en Anglais en dessous. Je travaille à la traduction de l'article en Français car je pense qu'il en vaut la peine. Dans quelques heures ou quelques jours il sera en Français dans un nouveau post.

It's been a very long time since we haven't written any article on this blog, and it is not because we did not have anything to say. From Steph still enjoying painting, being sick or riding her bike again to Matt's job loss, chase for a master of sustainable development or attempts not to be sent back to France by immigration, it is not the lack of things happennign to us that we did not write.
It probably is because we did not feel like writing too much or because we were busy. Only god knows...

Anyway, this morning I (Matt) found a really interesting article about Australia and I wanted to share it with whoever is going to read this blog. The article is from The Sydney Morning Herald and it talks about the last Qantas commercial. For years the first Australian airline company has been doing ads with kids singing the song "I still call Australia home" and for the first time this year it is an Aboriginal kid who is singing it in his own language.
The journalist talks about what it symbolises and also about the integration of the Aborignial culture in Australia today, how last years' appologies from the prime minister Kevin Rudd is the first step towards a solution to a question which is still hard to answer for many Australians.

Talkabout: time for Aboriginal languages to go mainstream

Waltzing Matilda is a dog of a folk song. That's probably unfair to dogs, as they rarely inflict themselves on thousands of people at once. It starts out as merely a bad tune, finishes worse and barks all the way down. If we had capital punishment for inanimate objects, this irritating howl should be first in the chair.

The Australian Rugby Union seems to have flicked the switch already and killed it off. The best thing about the Wallabies' woeful season was something that was not there, apart from the ability to, I don't know, score tries.

At least I think it was the ARU and I only think it's dead. I asked the ARU three times this week but got no response. I wanted to make sure, then thank the executioner, send him flowers, give him a big sloppy kiss. Whatever the reason for what didn't happen at Sydney's Bledisloe Cup match, we were spared the embarrassment of a stadium singalong about sheep stealing and suicide.

Now Waltzing is unattached, Tourism Australia will surely adopt it as the basis for the next successful marketing campaigns, picking up from inviting the world to schlep to this barely inhabited dustbowl by swearing at them. (I'll tell you where the bloody hell they are: the Greek islands, a £20, two-hour flight from London.)

Maybe it should instead look to Qantas, even in this, its shocker of a year. This week's annual report told of plunging profits and cutting costs, before outraging the country by finding a lazy $11 million lying on the tarmac to give to its former chief executive Geoff Dixon. Which is totally justified when he didn't even work a full year.

Next time you're losing an hour of your life stuck in the bag-drop queue, ponder what might have been if the airline spared a little more money for check-in staff and a little less for a departed old boss. It'd be nice, too, if it made on-board ''light refreshments'' mean something more than a biscuit and a dribble of a drink. Or dumped the ugly uniforms.

But Skippy-in-the-sky gets one thing right: its long-running ad campaign based on I Still Call Australia Home, one which shames Tourism Australia with a slightly naff song, sung so beautifully well.

After years of variations on the same theme, all those little kiddies in white coats serenading the world with a Peter Allen tune still bring a lump to your throat. Yet the latest incarnation does something else: it brings indigenous language into the mainstream.

The ad opens in the Purnululu National Park in the Kimberley, where a 13-year-old boy from Thursday Island, Tyus Arndt, sings the first verse in Kala Lagaw Ya, a language from Torres Strait.

Qantas directors should be ashamed of presiding over such an obscene, retch-inducing executive payout, yet their ad people deserve credit for taking an ancient Australian tongue and putting it on our prime-time screens.

The marketing gurus would have road-tested it up hill and down dale before unleashing it on us and been sure enough that, on seeing it, we wouldn't wonder if we'd mistakenly tuned into SBS.

Still, it's significant. Perhaps it's a small indicator that we're nudging on from the rut in which many of us find ourselves, unable to think of Aborigines in any terms other than disadvantaged or talented exceptions.

In public life, we celebrate individuals such as Rover Thomas, the Bangarra dancers and Cathy Freeman. At dinner parties, we admire dot paintings on lounge room walls, condemn endemic violence and out-of-sight Third World conditions and hope our governments will do something about it all. On the street, we ignore the drunks and assiduously avoid the Block. And that's about it.

In short, decades after the referendum and a year on from the apology, many of us remain uncomfortable with Aboriginal culture. We're unsure how we relate to it and how it relates to us. We rarely embrace the oldest parts of Australiana in our everyday lives and rarely, if ever, does something as basic as language cross into commonplace speech.

Yes, we have Barangaroo, kangaroos and didgeridoos. But how many of us know how to say hello in one of the remaining functioning native languages? How many of us know any Aboriginal word that isn't a proper noun?

How many phrases or idioms have helped make our colloquial English different from that spoken in Canada, America or Hong Kong?

When people do make an effort, it can grate. We're not used to it. Acknowledgments of country, for instance, can be clunky, easily dismissed as tokenistic. But the usual alternative is invisibility, especially as in our cities Aboriginal people often are.

NSW has the highest Aboriginal population in the country -with 148,000 in 2006, more than twice the Northern Territory. However, Aborigines make up just 2.2 per cent of the population. It's not easy to embrace a culture if you can't see it. But it's not as if many have made much of an effort.

Perhaps that's starting to change. Perhaps with the angst of the apology behind us, some of us find it somehow easier now to appreciate it. Perhaps Qantas was on to something.

One ad does not a trend make. Nor does the recent popularity of the award-winning singer from Arnhem Land, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, whose lyrics are more in his language than English. I have no idea what he's singing but it sounds nice. And while most Australians might prefer Waltzing Matilda, many of us like the haunting tunes of a blind Aborigine, too - his album Gurrumul made it to No. 4 in the ARIA charts.

Together, they might just be indicators - or at least cause for hope - that more of us are becoming comfortable enough to consider Aboriginal culture part of our own.

June in Oz - En Juin en Oz

Que se passe-t-il en Australie en Juin ?
Hello all of you !!!
This is what we did in Australia in June.

Le premier truc qui s'est passé en Juin a eu lieu en Mai... C'était l'anniversaire de Steph, à la fin du mois dernier, avec pleins de gens chez nous, une fête, des cadeaux (les verres "famille" de Matt on fait un tabac) et plein de fleurs pour la Birthday Girl :
The first thing that we did in June actually happened at the end May : it was steph's BirthDay with a big party at our place, lovely people, presents (the special "Family" glasses were a blast) and flowers for Steph :

Ensuite on se doit de parler de l'arrivée d'Augustin. Si certain d'entre vous n'étaient pas au courant, Augustin le petit frère de Matt est arrivé à Sydney pour 4 mois et un stage dans la boite de JB le 2ème frère qui est là depuis un moment lui... Donc avec Augustin ici, on a rien trouvé de mieux que d'aller dans les Blue Mountains et de prendre une photo devant les 3 Sisters... Ben ouais les 3 brothers devant les 3 sisters !!! Ah ah ah...
And then it was the arrival of Augustin. Matt's little brother has arrived to Sydney for 4 months, he is doing an internship at JB's work. So with Augustin here we went to the Blue Mountains and took photos of the 3 brothers in front of the 3 sisters... We're funny aren't we?

D'après cette photo, en prennant de l'age dans la famille Reure, on devient plus grand, on a des lunettes plus grosses et plus de barbe alors que nos cheveux rapetissent...

Et enfin pour terminer le mois de Juin il faut bien parler d'un truc très Australien, le "Christmas in July" ou Noël en Juillet. Le concept est très simple. Etant donné que Noël à lieu en plein milieu de l'été ici et que plein de gens on l'habitude et l'envie de faire un Noël bien froid avec de la neige et un gros repas de Noël pour se réchauffer, les Australiens souvent/parfois font un Noël pendant le mois de Juillet. (mais ça ne veut pas dire qu'il va forcément faire froid ou qu'il va neiger...)
Something very Australian which took place in June is Christmas in July. Easy concept : since real Christmas is in the middle of summer here and people want to have a cold Christmas with a big nice warm meal, they plan a Christmas party with the family in July !!!

Avec la famille du père de Steph nous l'avons fait le WE dernier à Canberra (Donc c'était Noël en Juillet en Juin...). Finalement c'est surtout une bonne façon de retrouver toute la famille et c'est très sympa.
With Steph's dad's family we had Christmas in July last Week-End in Canberra. It ended up being Whristmas in July in June but it doesn't really matter because it was a good excuse to gather with her family and eat nice food. A lovely afternoon really !

Une colonie de Français avec 2 Australiens au milieu va se retrouver pour voir le match de Rugby Australie-France... Ca va donc s'écharper dans les tribunes et sur le terrain. Mais la France va gagner!!

Après la Péninsule Banks nous sommes avons passé pas mal de temps en voiture pour nous rendre dans les Alpes du sud, mais les paysages sont tellement époustouflant que même la voiture c'est sympa. Voici quelques paysage sur la route :

Nous avons passé un après-midi passé à Lake Tekapo, un lac bleu turquoise assez hallucinant. Au programme, une petite ballade en haut d'un petit sommet d'où nous avons eu une vue exceptionnelle avec le couché de soleil sur l'ensemble des montagne et du lac...
We spent an afternoon in Lake Tekapo, a bright blue lake with a breathtaking color ! We had a small hike to the top of a small summit and enjoyed the view of the lake and the sunset over the mointains...

Puis après être redescendus au bord du lac nous sommes offert un petit massage et avons plongé dans des piscines chaudes au bord du lac... C'était vraiment les vacances ces 4 jours en NZ !!!
Coming back from this walk, we headed to the spa and hot pools of the city... A nice massage and a swim in 40°C water... We had to make those 4 days look like holidays !!

Le dernier jour, comme nous avions pu dormir dans l'appartement du beau père de Steph à Methven, nous sommes reté dans ce coin. Avant de prendre notre avion, nous avons fait un tour des vallées et lacs du coin. Un peu les mêmes que d'habitude nous direz vous ? Ouais mais la plupart des scènes du seigneur de anneaux ont été tournées là :
Our last day was spent around the city of Methven not very far from Christchurch. Since Russel, Steph's step-father, offered us to stay in a flat he owns there, we enjoyed it (thanks again Russel !!!) and before taking off, we drove around some more mountains and lakes. Those ones were the one used as "Stage" during the shooting of Lord of the Rings... Check it out :
